We were honored to contribute to the 7th Aviation Conference – Air Transport of Today and Tomorrow, held on 5–6 June 2025.

Mr. Ioannis Vellios, PhD candidate, presented during the session “Diversity at 35,000 Feet: Cabin Crew Training as a Strategic Tool for Inclusion and Excellence in the Airline Industry”, in collaboration with Dr. Maria Doumi, Associate Professor, Department of Tourism Economics and Management, University of the Aegean.

The presentation shared research insights on:

The session inspired insightful discussion and valuable exchange with professionals from across the aviation and tourism sectors. A key message echoed throughout: diversity is not only a core value, it is a critical driver of performance and innovation in the industry.

In details:

The global aviation industry continues to serve as a vital driver of tourism, economic growth, and international connectivity. In the years following the pandemic, air travel has not only recovered but has also transformed emerging as a key platform for inclusive and personalized passenger experiences. According to IATA (2024), scheduled air travel surpassed 4.7 billion passengers, reflecting a renewed momentum and an urgent need for service models grounded in cultural sensitivity and excellence.

In this context, cabin crew training has gained strategic importance. A meaningful distinction between education (the cultivation of awareness and theoretical understanding) and training (the practical application of skills) has become essential in managing diversity on board. As airlines operate in increasingly multicultural environments, the expectations placed on frontline personnel extend beyond safety and procedural compliance. Today, they include competencies in communication, emotional intelligence, and cultural responsiveness.

The evolving composition of both cabin crew (s) and passenger demographics underscores the need for continuous, structured learning initiatives that promote inclusion, respect, and high-quality service across all touchpoints of the passenger journey.

Investing in such training is not an operational expense it is a strategic commitment to excellence and long-term sustainability in air transport.

We warmly thank Mr. Andreas Papatheodorou for the kind invitation and support.
